This essay considers the potential for comparative analysis of postwar art in the Western world and Central/Eastern Europe. The work of the hitherto relatively unknown Czechoslovak artist Teodor Rotrekl, which evokes the style of Pop art, is used as a case study. The author of the essay argues that the social functions of art in the West and in the Communist bloc states are of greater consequence than the formal art languages. The substance of Rotrekl’s works remained largely consistent with the tenets of Socialist Realism. It can be argued that Pop art was not a global art movement, but rather a geographically limited aspect of postwar art.
