Impact od Eurasian otter disturbance on condition and growth rate of common carps in fishponds (preliminary results)
Original language description
In fishpond areas conflict between otter protection and fisheries is common phenomenon. According to fisherman, otters cause high economic damage both by consuming the fish and also by their disturbance in the over-wintering period resulting in loss of condition and higher predisposition of fish to diseases. In autumn 2007, 1 000 individually tagged Common carps were stocked into five different fishponds located in the Czech-Moravian Highlands in the Czech Republic. The visitation rate of fishponds by otters was monitored in subsequent winter period and thereafter all survived fish were stocked into one fishpond for the vegetation period. The condition and growth rate of survived fish was compared with the visitation rate of different fishponds by otters. The preliminary results show that the otter disturbance has the effect on condition of over-wintered carps. Moreover highly disturbed carps had significantly slower growth rate in subsequent vegetation period.
