The principle probiotics include lactobacilli, bifidobacteria, some nonpathogenic strains of Escherichia coli, and Saccharomyces boulardii. The microbiota, the mucosal immune system, and mucosal intestinal barrier constitute the gastrointestinal ecosystem.
