Probiotics and prebiotics - renaissance of a therapeutic principle.
Original language description
The principle probiotics include lactobacilli, bifidobacteria, some nonpathogenic strains of Escherichia coli, and Saccharomyces boulardii. The microbiota, the mucosal immune system, and mucosal intestinal barrier constitute the gastrointestinal ecosystem. Experimental studies displayed the prerequisites for the administration of probiotics in digestive and some extraintestinal diseases. Clinical studies have been performed in diseases of the digestive tube and the liver, allergic and atopic diseases aswell as in some other conditions. Probiotic therapy has a physiologic character and its safety is high.
