Prospective study was performed comparing the accuracy of Doppler ultrasonography (DUS) stenosis findings with measurements on histological specimens. Method: DUS were used to evaluate carotid stenosis and were compared to measurements on histological specimens. Intact carotid plaques from 123 cases were removed in one piece during surgery. The specimens were histologically processed and transversally cut. The smallest inner and correlating outer diameters were measured and the extent of stenosis was calculated. Carotid artery stenoses were compared and statistics done. DUS seems to be accurate in classifying stenoses into different groups in the extent of narrowing of the carotid arteries. Nevertheless, in absolute numbers significant differences werefound.

Czech description

Tato prospektivní studie je zaměřená na porovnání stenózy vnitřní karotidy měřené pomocí Dopplerovské ultrasonografie (DUS) s měřením stenózy na histologických preparátech. Metody: 123 intaktní ch plátů blyo odebráno při karotických endarterektomiích. Tyto byly posléze histologicky zpracovány a příčně prokrájeny. Nejmenší vnitřní a adekvátní vnější průměr plátu byly zaznamenány a na jejich základě byla stanovena míra stenózy. DUS se zdá být velmi přesnou metodou při zařazení pacienta do jednotlivé skupiny podle míry stenózy vnitřní karotidy, nicméně v absolutních číslech byly mezi DUS a pooperačním měření na plátu nalezeny signifikantní rozdíly.
