Visual evaluation of videokymographic images using laryngeal pictograms

  • Original language description

Videokymographic (VKG) imaging has been accepted as a novel convenient method of displaying the phonational behaviour of the vocal folds. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the reliability of clinical evaluation of the vibratory characteristics of the vocal folds using a visually-based perceptual evaluation protocol for videokymography. Evaluation of the total of 33 features was incorporated in the protocol, which covered: a) presence of vibration of the vocal folds, b) behaviour of surroundings, c) cycle-to-cycle variability, d) duration of glottal closure, e) left-right asymmetry, f) waveform skewing, g) shape of lateral peaks, h) laterally running mucosal waves, i) shape of medial peaks, and j) cycle aberrations. Simplified drawings (pictograms) were used for each of the features to make the evaluation easier. Ten judges evaluated these features in 50 VKG images from patients of various voice disorders. The results revealed that 11 parameters were evaluated identically
