This paper is an attempt at a panoramic view of the development of Czech musical thinking from Otakar Hostinský to Antonín Sychra as the leading figure of the ?Prague School? of the 1950s and ?60s. The concept of musical thinking has a very wide range ofmeanings in the scholarly literature, and this study directs attention principally at aesthetico-critical ?thinking about music.? The leading figures in the prewar development were representatives of the Hostinský school: Zdeňek Nejedlý, Otakar Zich, Vladimír Helfert, and Josef Hutter. In terms of stylistic development an important part of musical thinking is the critical evaluation of the work of the main composer figures, i.e. of the founding generation of modern Czech music (Smetana, Dvořák, Fibich), representatives of Czech modernism (Suk, Novák, Foerster, Janáček, Ostrčil, Kovařovic, Vycpálek) and the interwar avantgarde (Hába, Martinů).
