Duplex brass instruments of Josef Šediva and their functionality analysed by finite amplitude sound propagation theory
Original language description
Family of duplex instruments (so called schediphones) made by Josef Šediva (1853-1915), Czech brass instrument maker residing in Odessa, is studied by means of nonlinear sound wave propagation theory. The brassiness potential definition and its motivation are reviewed. The brassiness potential is determined for the different bore geometries of the schediphones and compared to the spectral centroid changes. The results show that Šediva accomplished the goal to build an instrument possessing features of fluegelhorn-like (conical) and trumpet-like (cylindrical) brasses.
