Tempo in Fourteenth-Century Music ("ars nova")
Original language description
In Middle Ages it was very important to understand division in which the music was written down. According to this it was possible to determinate right tempo for interpretation. Determining of tempo of performed composition by preservation of interrelations arising from different division of higher on lower note values is not as simple as that of the contemporary transcription might at first glance seem. Brevis (it means in contemporary transcription one bar) is considered as one beat. The composition should pulsate on full bars, not only on separate beats in the bar. According to medieval sources (Johannes Verulus, Philippe de Vitry, Marchettus da Padua) we are able to state precisely duration of French brevis in tempus perfectum minimum (Italian divisio ternaria) as 1/72 of minute, i.e. metronome’s value of brevis (one bar in contemporary transcription) = 72 MM. On the basis of exact descriptions of brevis divisions in different temporibus we can easily calculate also other tempo values.
