On Search for Elasticity Parameters of a Violin Top

The methods how to measure (directly) or establish (indirectly) elastic parameters of wood are based either on measurement of parameters of static deformation or on measurement of parameters of dynamic behavior of wood. Methods, which are performable in simple conditions (in situ) are based on measurement of sound velocity (velocity of propagation of longitudinal mechanical wave). These can be supported with measurement of displacements under load (static bending), or of eigenfrequencies of appropriate eigenmodes, which can be also used to establish the appropriate elastic parameters. The targets of this paper are: Identify a set of elastic parameters appropriate for wood as a linear orthotropic continuum (with respect to the theory of “thin plate”). Establish (measure) a set of achievable elastic parameters of specimen or sample of wood (spruce) used for violin top-plate construction. Discuss the extent and size of limitations of measurements, imperfections in specimen, and their possible influence on both: fidelity of measurements of elastic parameters of wood as well as on the vibrational behavior of wooden construction.
