The History of Czech Theatre. A Survey.
Original language description
The book describes the evolution of the Czech theatre in all the phases that contributed to the establishment of the national theatrical tradition. The author starts with first theatrical activities, and goes through medieval, renaissance and baroque theatre to the National Revival at the beginning of the 19th century; attention is paid to the foundation of the Czech National Theatre and to the emergence of the mise-en-sc?ne in the first half of the 20th century; finally, the highlights of theatre art of the second half of the 20th century, such as the ?golden sixties?, are mentioned. Theatre creation is not seen only as interpretation of a dramatic text, but as collective work of playwrights, actors, theatre managers, and later of directors and stagedesigners. The author suggests that in the Czech context the ?art theatre? is closely connected to the ?middle-class theatre?; that is one of the reasons why he emphasises the role of the audiences and their changing expectations.
