The paper deals with the 2018 HBO adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s 2006 novel Sharp Objects into a limited series, hailed for its innovative plunge into the dark waters of female rage and violence, but often denounced for its Gothic style and twisted narration, tapping into the rich reservoir of stereotypical (and disturbing, for some) screen versions of the American South. The article argues that it is exactly the workings of the meticulous production design, making heavy use of Gothic tropes and centering around a horror-like family home, where the past and present never part, along with the precise composition of the soundtrack, that shape the forms of southern feminine agency. At the same time, the text revitalizes a crucial concept of southern tomboyism to demonstrate how the updating of tomboyism in Sharp Objects not only allows for non-toxic feminine agency but also reshapes the southern Gothic imagination currently presented on television.
