Comics and Film: An Uncanny Relationship

  • Original language description

It was an international conference. The CFP was published on several websites as well as in the discussion group [COMIXSCHOLARS-L], which is specifically aimed at the community around comics studies—whether academics, students, illustrators, or simply “just” fans. • Abstracts underwent peer review, and in the end, 12 participants attended in person. They came from three continents, including one participant from the USA and one from India. Another four joined online (from Romania, Italy, Brazil, and the United Kingdom). I was thrilled that experts on comics from the Czech Republic, Martin Foret and Pavel Kořínek, also participated—they are among the very few academics in the country dedicated to comics studies. • The conference was extremely successful, and participants expressed a strong interest in seeing it continue in the coming years. The visual aspect of the conference was also highly appreciated. • A conference was focused on the relationship between film and comics, whether in general (e.g., my contribution on sound in comics vs. film, or Elizabeth Allyn Woock's presentation on the depiction of the Middle Ages in film and comics) or through specific cases (e.g., Batman, Who Framed Roger Rabbit). An important event also in terms of establishing connections between comics scholars across nations. • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce výsledku (min. 64 znaků): It was an international conference.
