Selected Ion Flow Tube (SIFT) Applications in Mass Spectrometry
Original language description
The first version of this article published in 1999 in Encyclopedianof Spectroscopy and Spectrometry, under the title “SIFTnapplications in mass spectrometry”, focused on the selectednion flow tube, SIFT, technique that was primarily developednand used for the study of the kinetics of ion-molecule reactionsnat thermal energies. The basic physics and ion chemistry onnwhich the SIFT technique relies were described by the ratencoefficients and product ion distributions for ion-molecule reactions, nboth of intrinsic fundamental interest and also of importancento the understanding of the ionic reactions that dominatenthe gas phase ion chemistry of the terrestrial atmosphere andnof the gas clouds that pervade the interstellar medium, asnreviewed in.1 In the interim, this science has moved on andnthe SIFT technique is now not so much used for fundamentalnion chemistry studies, although it still has a valuable role in thenlatest research in understanding the chemistry occurring innthe atmospheres of the satellites of the outer planets,2 but nownit is mostly used to underpin the new analytical method bynwhich ambient analysis of air and exhaled breath can be accomplished, nwhich we call selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry,nSIFT-MS, that is the focus of this updated article.
