Localizing double and triple bonds in lipid molecules by mass spectrometry
Original language description
This work presents two novel MS-based approaches for localizing double and triple bonds in lipid aliphatic chains. In the first approach, lipids were ionized by atmospheric pressure chemical ionization in the presence of acetonitrile. Collisional activation of the resulting C3H5N adducts yielded structure-informative fragments, enabling the characterization of fatty acids with isolated, cumulated, and conjugated double or triple bonds. The second approach involved forming lithium adducts of ester lipids in an electrospray source. Upon UV photodissociation (UVPD), these ions produced unique fragments via photoinduced cleavages at ester moieties and double bonds.
