Original language description
Mason Pfizer monkey virus (M-PMV), like some other betaretroviruses, encodes a glycine-rich domain, G-patch domain (GPD). Alanine scanning mutational analysis of its most highly conserved residues revealed that while the mutations or deletions of the GPDhad no effect on M-PMV proteolytic polyprotein processing, assembly and RNA incorporation, they caused a reduction of reverse transcriptase (RT) activity resulting in a drop in M-PMV infectivity. Immunoprecipitation experiments suggested that the GPD isa part of RT and participate in its function. These data indicate that the M-PMV GPD functions as a part of reverse transcriptase rather than protease.
