First report of Alopecurus arundinaceus, A. myosuroides, Hordeum violaceum and Phleum pratense as hosts of Claviceps purpurea population G2 in Turkey

  • Original language description

Ergot was observed on of Alopecurus arundinaceus, A. myosuroides, Hordeum violaceum and Phleum pretense in Erzurum (Turkey) in 2002-2003. All isolates were identified as a G2 population (also a chemorace) of Claviceps purpurea, based on RAPD and restriction pattern of 5,8S rDNA, longer conidia and alkaloids ergocristine and ergosine found in their sclerotia. Pure cultures were obtained from sclerotia on the above hosts. H. vulgare and P. pratense were artificially inoculated by a conidial suspension from these isolates and formation of sphacelia and honeydew occurred only on inoculated plants. The identity of the pathogen causing honeydew symptoms was reconfirmed using RAPD
