Nonlinear Wave Modulation and Time Reversal Tomography of Structural Defects
Original language description
Classical ultrasonic tomography generally uses source signals of constant amplitude. Linear characteristics like amplitude attenuation or time of flight of elastic waves traversing a body in different directions are evaluated and used to localization andimaging of relatively large structural defects. The main advantage of nonlinear methods is their high sensitivity and ability to disclose defects smaller than ultrasound wavelength. Some limitations are connected with difficulties of defects location. To overcome these constraints, further modifications of NEWS, referred as nonlinear tomography procedures, are discussed in this paper. Two NEWS techniques are considered: Nonlinear wave modulation (NWMS) and nonlinear time reversal (NLTR), both using transducer arrays, allowing localization of damaged zones. Extracted nonlinear parameters are dependent on the wave paths along damaged zones, which allows zonal imaging of defects.
