Finite element simulation of vocal exercising effects on phonation

  • Original language description

The study investigated the effects of the vocal tract changes on sound energy transfer from the vocal tract. Two 3D finite element (FE) computer models were constructed, based on CT measurements of a female subject phonating on [a:] before and after phonation into a tube. A short pulse of acoustic flow velocity was used as the acoustic excitation of the FE models at the vocal folds level and the acoustic pressure in front of the mouth was numerically simulated. Comparison of the SPL computed inside andoutside the vocal tract showed that formants differ in their cost-efficacy, F4 being the most effective. Consequently, a sound energy concentration around 3.5 kHz (F4-F6) region is an effective tool for communication. Based on the FE modeling results, the changes observed in the vocal tract able alone to explain the measured increase in SPL.
