Nonlinear ultrasonic spectroscopy and acoustic emission in SHM of aircrafts
Original language description
Example of a complex Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system design for some critical parts of an aircraft is discussed in this paper. The system was tested during fatigue loading of those parts. The Nonlinear Elastic Wave Spectroscopy (NEWS) pseudo-tomography procedure, based on Time Reversal Mirrors (TRM) with Excitation Symmetry Analysis Method (ESAM) enabled zone-location of small defects, not detectable by other classical non-destructive (NDT) procedures. Damaged zone location results corresponded with acoustic emission (AE) sources localized within the loading periods by using artificial neural networks with so called signal arrival time profiles. Results reflect good robustness of both techniques, and support their helpfulness in SHM of aircraft.
