A criterion for the occurrence of bubble fission and its modeling

  • Original language description

In this paper we introduce a bubble break-up criterion based on Rayleigh-Taylor instability where the number of fission fragments is taken as a free parameter. Consequently, we identify the bubble break-up time, prior to the time where the minimum volumeduring the collapse period is achieved, utilizing the most unstable mode of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. We then modify the model of Delale and Tunc [1] by shifting the time of the discontinuity in the mean bubble radius during break-up to the proposed bubble break-up time before the minimum volume is reached. A numerical algorithm to calculate the predictions of the proposed model is constructed. Results obtained by the proposed bubble break-up criterion, as compared to the model of Delale and Tunc, for a typical violently collapsing cavitation bubble show that, in the proposed model, more energy is dissipated during bubble fission if the number of fission fragments is low enough and that no significant differences in energy dissi
