Bipenalty explicit finite element algorithm for the solution of contact-impact problems
Original language description
In dynamic transient analysis, recent comprehensive studies have shown that using mass penalty together with standard stiffness penalty, the so-called bipenalty technique, preserves the critical time step in conditionally stable time integration schemes. In this paper, the bipenalty approach is applied in the explicit contact-impact algorithm based on the pre-discretization penalty formulationnfor the solution of 2D/3D problems. Several numerical examples are presented including the longitudinal impact of two thick plates, for which analytical solution is available and the Taylor high-velocity impact test with elastic-plastic flow model. In all the cases the superiority of the bipenalty method over the standard stiffness penalty method is demonstrated.
