We have applied SDG technology for producing nanoparticles from platinum ingots (purity of 99.9 wt. %) as a feed material by using forming gas as a carrier gas. Our production process of membrane-electrode assemblies (MEA) for low-temperature PEM hydrogen fuel cells has been based on a direct deposition of 5 nm average diameter platinum-based catalytic nanoparticles on the microporous layer of gas diffusion layer (GDL), followed by the hot-pressing procedure. We have successfully achieved a scale-up of the active area of MEAs from laboratory size (5 cm2) to commercial size (100 cm2).
