Production of long-lived hafnium isomers in reactor irradiations

Result description

Experiments on production of long-lived Hf isomer in reactor irradiation are described. Properties of this nuclide are promissing for its potential application as a relatively safe power source characterized by high density of a accumulated energy. MetalHf samples were activated in the Dubna IBR-2 reactor at positions corresponding to different neutron fluxes. Samples were bare or shielded by Cd and B C layers. The gamma activity of the samples was analyzed with Ge gamma spectrometers during a two-yearperiod following their irradiation. In the presence of dominant activation products Hf and Hf, the high-spin isomers Hf and Hf are also detected despite relatively low levels. The isomer-to-ground state reactins and cross-sections were determined from the measured yields. For Hf, the cross-section for burnup (destruction) by neutron capture after its production was also estimated, clarifying the results from earlier experiments.

  • Czech description

Vzorky Hf byly aktivovány v reaktoru IBR-2v SÚJV Dubna.Byly stíněny Cd a B4C filtrem a bez filtru byly umístěny v různých neutronových tocích.Spektry gama se měřily během dvou let.
