Shutdown dose rate analysis for the European TBM system in ITER
Original language description
ITER will provide one equatorial port for irradiation and performance tests of the European Test Blanket Modules (TBM). The associated port plug integrates the TBM system with attached shield modules and the port plug frame made of steel/water. The TBM system houses two vertically oriented TBMs of the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) and the Helium-Cooled Lithium-Lead (HCLL) blanket type separated by a water cooled steel wall. Lateral gaps separate the TBMs and the shield modules from the port frame walls. Such gaps have a strong impact on the shielding performance of the entire TBM port system affecting among others the activation of the surrounding materials. During shutdown periods, the activation gives rise to a gamma radiation field which may affect necessary hands-on operations during maintenance and repair services. ITER design rules require the shutdown dose rate level to be less than 100 ?Sv/h after a waiting time of 106 s (to 12 days). Qualified shutdown dose rate calculations
