    Influence of Cosmic Rays on Ionization in the Atmosphere during Thunderstorms

    Thunderstorms are extreme atmospheric phenomena that occur frequently around us. Even though they have been studied intensively during the last hundred years, there are still gaps in our understanding that remain to be addressed. One way to study thunderstorms is a Cloud Electrification Model (CEM) together with a weather prediction model. This model encompasses all relevant variables of the atmosphere, such as cosmic rays and their ionization of the atmosphere. This variable in altitude used to be taken as a constant in time and geolocation, even though cosmic rays vary in such parameters. This thesis aims to address this problem and exploit its usability to enhance CEM. Key steps are a basic model of cosmic rays induced atmospheric ionization during fair weather, calculation of additional ionization in thunderstorms’ strong electric field, and observations of particles accelerated in thunderstorms. The observations are essential as they bring further insight into the thunderstorm, namely the necessary strength of the inner electric field.
