Determination of chemical elements in insects as food and feed by neutron and photon activation analyses

  • Original language description

Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and instrumental photon activation analysis (IPAA) were used to determine the mass fractions of elements in edible insects. These non-destructive methods allow the sensitive and accurate measurement elements in the biological matrix. Major nutritionally significant elements as Na, Mg, K, Ca, and trace elements as Al, Cl, V, Cr, Fe, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Br, and I were determined in insects-Acheta domesticus, Alphitobius diaperinus, Locusta migratoria, Tenebrio molitor, Hermetia illucens, Apis mellifera, Zophobas morio, Gryllus assimilis, and Blaberus discoidalis. Other elements like Sc, Ti, Sr, Mo, Sb, Cs, Ba, W, and Au were found in some insect species. Toxic elements Ni, As, Cd, and Pb were not detected, with exceptions. The results of the determination were compared with reference daily allowance (RDA) for healthy individuals. The analysis of edible insects has great importance in the integration of insects into the human and animal diets as a possible solution to the global challenges of sustainable agriculture, climate crisis and food security. This introductory study presents the application of INAA and IPAA to determinine elemental content in edible insects, an approach not previously reported in the literature.
