Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) microspheres: preparation by poly(acrylic acid)-stabilized dispersion polymerization and effect of some reaction parameters
Original language description
Monodisperse poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) microspheres 0.5-5.4 ?m in size were prepared by the dispersion polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in ethanol (EtOH), EtOH/water and EtOH/2-ethoxyethanol (EtCel) mixtures. 2,2-Azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) of different molecular weight (Mw = 50 000; 230,000 and 750,000) served as initiator and stabilizer, respectively. The effect of various polymerization conditions, such as solvency of the reaction medium, concentration of the monomer and initiator, concentration and molecular weight of the stabilizer and the polymerization temperature on morphology, size and polydispersity of PGMA microspheres was investigated using scanning electron microscope. Both medium-molecular-weight PAAs (Mw = 50,000 and 230,000) provided monodisperse microspheres within relatively broad size range 1-5.4 ?m; the size was controlled by the selection of the reaction conditions. In contrast, very narrow window of reaction con
