Patents are a rich, though often overlooked, source of information on technological advances. With proper tools that empower 'information mining', a lot of useful information contained in patents can be exploited. This article briefly presents the capabilities several patent databases, describes how to perform various types of searches and illustrates how to get the most information from the sources provided.
