Properties of plasma sprayed TiO2 ceramic membranes for photocatalysis
Original language description
This paper reports on the preparation of titania filters and membranes and their post-treatment by anatase impregnation to enhance the photocatalytic effect. The starting material (Altair ? rutile/anatase 75/25) was plasma sprayed onto graphite and aluminum substrates, which were then removed by thermal shock. This way, up to 40 kg/hr of starting material can be processed, forming freestanding parts of several dm2 areas. The porosity and permeability of the primary highly porous deposits was first determined by mercury intrusion porosimetry and HCl-test, and then reduced by anatase impregnation. This process involved hydrolysis of gaseous titanium tetrachloride during a unidirectional diffusion into the membrane pores, followed by thermal decompositionat 450°C. The porous plasma sprayed rutile/anatase deposits themselves showed a moderate photocatalytic effect.
