Potential applications of tandem shock waves in cancer treatment
Original language description
We have developed a generator of two successive shock waves focused to a common focal point?tandem shocks. Time interval between the two shocks can be varied. It was found that acoustical inhomogeniety created in water by the first wave strongly modifiespropagation of the second wave. We have measured waveforms of the second wave at the focus for different time intervals after the first wave. In short times (5-20 ms) the second wave reaches the focus as a rarefaction wave producing a large number of cavitations. Amplitude of the wave gradually decreases with the increasing time delay. Schlieren photos show very complex pressure field at the focal region. For a longer time delay (50-500ms) the second wave is almost totally damped at the focus. Propagation of the second pressure wave is reestablished only for very long time intervals (0,7 ? 2 ms) when cavitations produced by the first wave are quenched.
