The paper presents background, motivation and current state of the Fluid Science International COE project called ?Investigation of supersonic hybrid-stabilized argon-water arc for biomass gasification. The aim of this project is to describe precisely flow field and temperature characteristics in the near-outlet region of the hybrid arc for broad range of currents (300-600 A) and high argon mass flow rates. Our numerical simulations reveal transition from a transonic plasma flow for 400 A to a supersonic one for 600 A with the maximum Mach number of 1.6. Comparison with available experimental temperature and velocity profiles shows very good agreement.
