A note on the Radial Extent of LH wave ? tokamak SOL interaction

  • Original language description

The radial extent of Landau interaction of tokamak edge electrons with the lower hybrid (LH) antenna electric field is analyzed. The electron acceleration associated with the power absorption results in high power-flows along magnetic field lines towardtokamak vessel components causing their possible damage. It is therefore of some practical importance to understand the radial extent of the LH-generated fast electron population. The present-day understanding, based on 2-D PIC simulations in quiescent plasma, indicate a radial interaction zone of the order of a few millimeters adjacent to the grill mouth [1]. However, recent experimental results from retarding field analyzer measurements on Tore Supra (TS) have shown the existence of fast electrons asfar as a few centimeters from the grill mouth [1], which exhibit temporal intermittency at a rate comparable with the detachment rate of relatively hot and dense plasma ?blobs from the main body of the plasma.
