Effect of misaligned edges and magnetic field orientation on plasma deposition into gaps during ELMs on ITER

  • Original language description

In tokamaks, where possible in areas of high conducted heat flux flowing parallel to magnetic field lines (for example in the divertor strike point vicinity), surfaces are oriented with glancing angles to the magnetic field in order to spread the power over the widest possible area. As a consequence of grazing angles, any protruding edges on these surfaces (due for example to mechanical misalignment) can lead to serious power overload and therefore to rapid damage. Using particle-in-cell simulations, power fluxes impinging on the gaps between misaligned edges due to Edge Localised Mode transients have been evaluated and are presented in this paper. The results of the computations show that the power deposited to the protruding edges is lower than the one expected without taking into account particle orbits. Particle fluxes inside a gap are also investigated as a function of the field line orientation with respect to the gap direction.
