Thermally Sprayed Functionally Graded Materials(DOI: 10.1002/9781118144442.ch10)
Original language description
Single materials are often unable to meet properties required for certain applications. One possible option besides classical composites is functionally graded materials (FGM). Pros and cons of FGM are briefly listed. However, wider application of FGMs depends on availability of suitable production techniques, thermal spraying (TS) being one of them. Both basic types of FGMs, i.e. with a continuous gradient of properties and ?sandwich types can be prepared by TS, such as water stabilized plasma sprayingby WSP. Various FGM produced by plasma spraying are then introduced and their properties discussed. Among them is combination of various oxides, ?structural? FGM (having different types of the structure at various positions), combination of metals and ceramics, etc. Possible problems in processing as well as of products are pointed out and the target applications proposed.
