As in many of today’s tokamaks, plasma start-up in ITER will be performed in limiternconfiguration on either the inner or outer midplane first wall (FW). The massive, berylliumnarmored FW panels are toroidally shaped both to protect panel-to-panel misalignments and tonoptimize the spreading of power on the panel surface for a given radial profile of parallel heatnflux, q|| in the scrape-off layer (SOL).
