Peroxynitrite Post-Discharge Kinetics in Liquids Treated by Gas Phase Plasma Discharges Driven by Nanosecond High Voltage Pulses

  • Original language description

The aim of this work is to investigate post-discharge kinetics of peroxynitrite formation in aqueous liquids treated by atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) driven by nanosecond pulses. The change of pH and temperature of formed PAW was monitored. The kinetics of NO2 - and H2O2 decay in PAW is investigated. Evolution of nitrites and nitrates concentrations in PAW after plasma treatment have been measured by means of ion chromatography, while H2O2 concentration using the titanium sulfate method. From the kinetics of NO2 - and H2O2 decay, the rates of ONOOH formation in PAW were determined for various acidic pH values. The rate of ONOOH formation increased with [H+] and increased by 4 times when lowering the pH of the solution from 2.9 to 2.3. These findings contribute significantly to the understanding of the chemistry of peroxynitrite formation in air plasma-treated water, i.e. dominant pathway ONOOH formation is through the post-discharge reaction between H2O2 and HNO2.
