Advanced thermomechanical monitoring of critical components at COMPASS Upgrade tokamak
Original language description
COMPASS Upgrade tokamak is a new medium-sized tokamak designed and built in Prague, Czech Republic. COMPASS upgrade will feature a high toroidal magnetic field of BT = 5 T, high plasma current Ip ≤ 2 MA, and a high plasma electron density [1]. Thanks to its capabilities COMPASS Upgrade will address key challenges related to plasma exhaust physics, and advanced confinement modes. The COMPASS Upgrade tokamak’s copper toroidal and poloidal coils will be operated at liquid nitrogen temperature (80 K). The support structure will also be kept at a cryogenic temperature, while the vacuum vessel will be at room temperature or will be kept heated up to 773 K.We have designed instruments for monitoring the thermo-mechanical behavior and electrical properties of the tokamak during the commissioning and operation phase. The diverse composition of the sensors for measuring temperature includes platinum-type sensors, mineral insulated cables with ungrounded thermocouple tips, and an optical system based on GaAs crystal. FBG optical sensors will be installed directly on the coil groundinsulation to measure the deformation of the core part of toroidal field coils. Also, the design of the voltage taps cable transitions through the ground insulation of the toroidal magnetic field coils will be discussed. This contribution will provide a detailed description of sensor type selection, and placement.
