Life-threatening hyponatremia
Original language description
Hyponatremia is characterized by a decrease of serum sodium level below 135 mmol/1. Severe hyponatremia (serum levels below 127 mmol/1) developed within 48 hours or below 120 mmol/1 developing during a longer period of time) is associated with a high risk life-threatening osmotic demyelinization syndrome. The same risk originates in an ill-judged correction of these extremely low pathological levels.
