Tracheostomy in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea is not always the definitive solution

  • Original language description

Tracheostomy still has a place in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Nevertheless decannulation is possible even in extremely obese patients using appropriate surgical techniques and safety conditions. The authors present an unique case of a morbidly obese patient with breathing difficulties and severe obstructive sleep apnea due to extreme hypertrophy of the base of tongue (suspected malignant disease), due to which it was necessary to perform a tracheostomy. Subsequent partial laser endoscopic resection and radiofrequency reduction of the tongue base allowed gradual decannulation of the patient.
