This essay focuses on the reception of the Holocaust in the United States. It attempts to explain the reasons behind Americans? rather indifferent response to the genocide of Jews during World War II and in the early years of the Cold War. It illuminatesthe impact of propaganda on the response to the Holocaust in both parts of a geopolitically divided world. The purpose of this essay is to show how the reception of the Holocaust in American society affected the representation of this tragic event in American literature and culture in the postwar period.
