Spirituality in the work of Gary Snyder
Original language description
The study analyses the spirituality of a California poet and essayist Gary Snyder in six selected works: Myths & Texts (1960), Earth House Hold (1969), Turtle Island (1974), The Real Work (1980), A Place in Space (1990) and The Practice of the Wild (1995). In his syncretistic work the author integrates spiritual influences of Native Americans and Zen Buddhism. Four aspects of spirituality are analysed, namely identity, community, divinity and integrity. These are the common elements found in several definitions of spirituality, and have become the backbone of the study. The aim of the study is to identify the various spiritual influences in Snyder?s work and to analyze and interpret them in the context of author?s spiritual vision as a whole. It also aims to assess the consistency and legitimacy of the writer?s spirituality.
