The analysis strives to identify and discuss the ways the layout contributes to the web page composition, helps to build the effect of completeness of this discontinuous genre by linking units within as well as across individual modes, and supports the achievement of its communicative goals. The corpus of this prevailingly qualitative study includes the home pages and the prospective students? home pages of 4 British, 4 North American and 4 Czech universities, which enables an intercultural comparison to be made.
