Original language description
This paper explores the cohesive capacity of internet memes within the communal and multimodal environment of Facebook. Attention is paid specifically to the Countryball memes gathered and analyzed in the context of POLANDBALL community. The paper poses that the cohesiveness of the community rests on its inclination to linguistic as well as social homogeneity based on disparagement humor revolving around cultural and national stereotypes. Grounded in the Social Identity Approach, stereotyping is analyzed as a cohesive device with respect to the multimodal dimensions of memetic communication and its recurring linguistic properties.
