Hispanic American Literature, immigrant literature, Cristina Garcia, Junot Díaz, identity, family relationshipsPopis v původním jazyce * :This paper studies the representation of immigration in Hispanic American literatureand focuses on Americans of Cuban and Dominican origin as two differentsub-cultures of the same ethnic group. Specifically, it analyzes two literaryworks produced by Hispanic American authors, Cristina García?s novel Dreaming in Cuban and Junot Díaz?s shortstory collection Drown. Their commondenominator is the image of theimmigrant American Dream and the successes and failures accompanying itspursuit in connection with the immigrant?s in/ability to embrace the newculture and adjust to changes. The paper focuses on themes that are common toboth works as well as differences in terms of the two examined ethnic groups,i.e. themes of hyphenated identity, assimilation, family relationships, and theabsence of a father.
