The aim of the paper is to show the forms of cooperation, coordination and the division of work which arose, in connection with the introduction of a box called Umgangssprache (language of daily communication) into the Cisleithanian census in 1880, for the state apparatus and local self-governments (jointly responsible for the preparation and execution of the censuses), as well as for the political public led by national organisations (attitudes to the 'correctness' of the census and its results).
