Peter of Zittau: Sermons on the Principal Feasts. Petr Žitavský: Kázání na velké svátky
Original language description
Peter of Zittau (d. 1339), the Abbot of the Zbraslav Monastery near Prague, is best known for being the author of the Zbraslav Chronicle (Chronica Aulae regiae). However, his literary legacy also includes a rare example of Bohemian Latin preaching texts dating from before the mid-14th century – an extensive collection of sermons for principal Cistercian feasts (Sermones de principalibus festis). Just one manuscript of this collection has survived (Ms 434 at Leipzig University Library), and it includes alterations to the text made by the author. This book presents the first edited text of Sermones de principalibus festis and situates the collection within its literary-historical context: it presents the author, the environment in which the texts originated, the audience at which the sermons were targeted, the process by which the surviving text was created, and known sources.
