Ortega y Gasset’s Early Philosophy of History: Metahistory and Historiology
Original language description
This expository study traces the early thoughts of Ortega y Gasset in the philosophy of history. Chronologically, it first presents Ortega’s statement of the existence of historical reality and his demand for the establishment of a new discipline of metahistory to question the presuppositions of his¬torical investigation. Dissatisfaction with the existing form of history later leads Ortega to attempt to develop it into a scientific discipline, for which he proposes his historiology to formulate general models for the practice of the humanities. As specific models, the philosopher elaborates the schema of generation and crisis. Both metahistory and historiology are subsumed under the theory of historical reason in the author’s later works. The philos¬opher’s contribution to the philosophy of history uniquely combines vitalist speculation with a then innovative positivist methodology.
