    The Snowballing of Globalisation

  • Original language description

This article examines the entanglements between European/global developments and the Romanian tourism industry from the early 1960s until 1989. It shows that international tourism in socialist Romania was affected by the globalisation of thelate 1960s and 1970s and the economic crisis triggered by the ‘second oil shock’ in Western Europe and the US in the late 1970s and early 1980s, while it also had to deal with the systemic crises of the centralised economy at the domestic level. Overall,it seeks to answer the following questions: what role did Western globalisation in the 1970s play in shaping tourism policy and industry in socialist Romania? How did a sector like international tourism in a small ‘peripheral’ country like socialist Romania come to be affected by the economic crisis of the 1970s, and last but not least, how did the Romanian state respond to such crises?
