The originary sciences
Original language description
This entry considers the originary sciences that infer or discover origins. It argues that origins are information sources that transmit encoded information signals to receivers. Originary sciences identify information preserving receivers, decode the signals, and use them as premises to infer their origins. Some causes are not origins. Origination supervenes on causation, but has different properties. Irrespective of which of the main four theories of causation (conditional, regulatory, process, and counterfactual) is preferred, causes are distinguishable from origins. The unique properties of origins shield theories of origination from the kind of counterexamples and counterintuitive results that challenge theories of causation. The epistemology of origination may serve as a basis for founding a philosophical division of the sciences into originary historical sciences and causal theoretical sciences. The distinction between originary and causal sciences cuts through established disciplinary boundaries to base the distinction between the sciences on firm epistemic foundations and on actual scientific methods and practices.
