The chapter analyzes the development of Purhepechan nationalism in Michoacán, Mexico. A special attention is paid to the role of intellectuals in the process of ethnic / national mobilization. Using Anthony D. Smith's terms "ethnie" and "nation", the author analyzes the sources and conflicting conceptions of the Purhepechan identity as it moves from the cultural to the political arena.

Tato kapitola analyzuje vývoj purépečského nacionalismu v Michoacánu v Mexiku. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována roli intelektuálů v procesu etnonárodní mobilizace. S pomocí termínů "ethnie" a "národ", jak je definuje Anthony D. Smith, autor analyzuje zdroje a konfliktní představy o purépečské identitě v souvislosti s její politicizací a přechodem od ryze kulturního k militantně politickému pojetí.
